Domain Names and Stuff

Tell me:
Do I care about this? Should I care about this?
Does it kill you guys to type .blogspot.com right now? My blog is pretty tiny, but I do want to grow and take things a little more seriously (bahahahahaha..yeah right).
Also, let's take into consideration that I am kind of a cheapskate. Like, godaddy.com $9.99 for 2 years of domain hosting cheapskate. But.. Do I really want the boobie commercial people to host my website? I really might need the $5.00 a year I will save if I go with them (according to my husband, who is even cheaper than I am).
I have a couple of readers who know what they are doing, and I would appreciate the feedback/direction/love on this subject (because I think I am the one that is too lazy to type .blogspot.com at this point).

  1. You might want to go the route of simply registering your domain and having it redirect to your blogger site. Super easy to do through blogger's interface, and registering your domain is EVEN cheaper than the godaddy hosting, haha. In fact if you do a google search I bet you'll be able to find some coupon codes to register it via godaddy or another host. I didn't pay for my domain's registration for the first year or 2.

  2. p.s. it's a good idea to own your domain name if anything to prevent domain squatters. What happens if you get super famous and then you try to register your domain name and find out some jerk is sitting on it just so he can charge you a gajillion dollars to buy it off him?

  3. Personally, I truly dislike seeing Danica each time I sign into my Godaddy account, but I have to say that in four years or so of using them, I'm still happy enough with them that I can overlook the very annoying face on their page! I know a lot of people really don't like them or use others, but I've only had a few problems..and while I'd prefer none, they've been very responsive each time. I hate the yearly expense, but I also like that I have just one little added edge to being taken seriously as a blogger (not that I feel otherwise, but I have been asked before if I own my own domain..) and I have the freedom to do a lot more owning it than if I didn't, as other platforms can limit our creativity and merchant options, too. Not sure where the line is that you need to own your own domain, or if there really is one, but I agree with what Alyson said -- buy your own domain just to prevent someone else from getting it in the event you ever DO want it. Have fun with whatever you do!

  5. I feel the same way about mines... I see so many other popular blogs out there that still use at blogspot.com…and I don't mind typing it. I just hate typing it for my address. Weird I know. I think I would leave it as is but if I get popular than I'll go the extra mile. If my name is taken, because you do run that risk, then it’ll give me the opportunity to re-evaluate and rename my blog. I've seen other bloggers do this too.

  7. i have godaddy and i have zero complaints!

and a domain is just to make things simpler. it's easier for people to remember and easier to tell other people what your blog address is. it's not the most important thing ever... i know a few HUGE blogs that still use blogspot. it's not a big deal.

also, stop self depreciating! you're awesome. just own it. blog for fun and have fun.

  8. I'm just worried that if for some reason I forget to (or just don't) pay for one year, that my readers won't be able to find me again...

  9. GoDaddy is have a 99 cent domain sale right now. I just bought a domain for my new blog & it cost me $1.17 for a 1 year registration. I've always been against domain name registration because of the cost, but with this sale, I finally broke down & bought one.
